DeWalt DW735X Planer Review

Overview

DeWalt 13” Two-Speed Planer outperforms all other planners in its class. The powerful 15 Amp motor drives the cutter head at 10,000 RPM, making it possible to run deep cuts, up to 1/8inch, with ease in wide material.

The DeWalt Planer DW735X Package includes a 13inch Two-Speed Planer, an extra set of planer knives, and infeed-outfeed tables. It runs several species of hardwoods, including ash, reclaimed oak, and mahogany. The planer worked remarkably well, and at 15 amps, it had plenty of power to pull through and plane each hardwood without any hesitation.

Features

Cutterhead

Three-knife cutter-head delivers 30% longer knife life, and a new design makes knife changes faster and easier. Fan-assisted chip ejection vacuums chip off the cutter head and exhaust them out of the machine.

The cutter head is a three-knife cutter head, and it produces smooth finishes when you plane with it. The wood requires little sanding when done planning it.

Gearbox

Two-speed gearbox optimizes cuts per inch at 96 or 79.  The fan-assisted chip ejection vacuums chip off the cutter-head and exhaust them out of the DeWalt planer. The fan-assisted chip ejection system works in conjunction with independent dust collection systems.

The capacity of most vacs does not support the volume of chips ejected during planning. The vacuum hose may clog, stopping the flow of chips. Use the dust collection system to clean debris from the interior.

With a dust-assisted dust ejection and dust port, you can easily handle and contain all the dust produced while working with the planer.

Base

The 19-3/4inch cast aluminum base is twice as rigid as standard 10inch bases and folding tables. The purchase includes one stationary 13inch Planer, in/outfeed tables with fasteners attached to the Planer base, extra blades, and a dust hose adapter. The stand is not included.

Carriage lock

An automatic carriage lock reduces the movement that causes snipe without manual engagement by the user. There is no manual carriage lock on your planer. A device that minimizes the movement causes snipes during planning into the four threaded posts.

Gauge

Easy-to-read material removal gauge and extra-large thickness scale ensure accurate cuts with every pass. It has a 2-speed gearbox. Adjust the cutter head speed from 96 CPI (cuts per inch) to 179 CPI.

Turret depth

Extra-large turret depth stop allows users to return to the most frequently used thicknesses with ease. Install the depth adjustment crank handle and remove the screw located in the crank handle shaft. Insert the crank handle over the shaft, and secure it with the screw and T-wrench provided.

The depth adjustment scale  14 is on the right front of your planer. It indicates the finished thickness of your workpiece. One rotation of the depth adjustment crank equals 1/16″ (1.6 mm), h.

Warranty

Dewalt comes with a Three-Year Limited Warranty. The company will repair, without charge, any defects due to faulty materials or workmanship for three years from the date of purchase. That warranty does not cover part failure due to normal wear or tool abuse.

Contact the supplier for more information. That warranty does not apply to accessories or damage caused where repairs have been made or attempted by others.

DEWALT warrants this product to the original purchaser for its useful life against deficiencies in material and workmanship. It should not exceed one year for products with electrical or electronic components. The Limited lifetime warranty does not cover products improperly used. Replace deficient products or repair, and an accidental start-up can cause injury.

On/Off Switch

To turn the planer on, lift the switch—the planer locks on automatically. Press the switch down to turn off the tool. A hole is under the switch for padlock insertion to lock off the planer.

Specifications

Speed

Dewalt 13 comes with a no-load speed of 10,000 RPM. Switch speeds when the planer is running.

Your planer feeds material at two different speeds. The two-speed feature improves

efficiency when planning and provides the best possible surface finish materials. Set the unit at speed “2” to remove material thickness quickly. That setting delivers 96 cuts per inch to the material.

Set the unit to speed “1” for finishing. Speed “1” ensures the finish on the last pass before your final thickness. When planning hard or figured specie wood, speed “1” is recommended. The slower feed rate will reduce knife wear and tear-out by delivering 179 cuts per inch to the material.

The slower speed is for removing a lot of material at once, while the faster speed is for applying a fine finish to the wood to get a fine finish. It cuts through whatever type of lumber you feed through it.

Feeds

Feed Speed: 14 or 26inch per minute. It has two feed speeds. One is for quick thickness planning and the other for detailed finishing. Speed 1 slows the automatic feed, allowing the blades to cut the workpiece 179 times per inch. That leaves a nice smooth finish. Speed 2 increases the automatic feed speed, lowering the number of cuts per inch to only 96, making dimensioning lumber quicker.

Maximum Width

It has a higher width capacity of 13 inches, meaning you can plane wide boards with it.

Planning depth

The maximum planning depth is 1/8inches. The depth setting dial has several incremental depth stops at standard measurements from 1/8th of an inch to 1-1/4 inches. That feature helps when there is a need to plane several reclaimed oak boards for a desktop to 1-1/4 thick.

Weight

The product weight is 101 lb. If you need a portable thickness planer, you may as well go for this one.

Durability

The machine sits on a cast aluminum base, and although the casing is molded plastic, it is solid.

Price

It is a high-end model, and the price range matches its features. The features outsmart other models in the industry. If you want something a bit more budget-friendly,  you may have to consider other models.

Verdict

DeWalt DW735X Planer Review has more features than other models, and it handles wider material. The DeWalt DW735 is an upgrade from the lower-powered benchtop planer and effectively bridges the gap to professional shop machinery.
