How to remove teak oil from wood

Using wood finish stripper

Remove any dirt or grime from the furniture by washing it. Allow for complete drying.

Rub the wood finish stripper to the furniture as directed on the package. Strippers come in various brands and varieties, some of which you can apply with a sprayer and others with a brush. They’re also available in liquid and gel form. Allow the stripper to sit in the designated area according to the instructions.

Using a paint scraper, remove any teak finish that has peeled or bubbled. The stripper dampens the wood, so ensure it’s scorched before continuing. Allow the furniture to dry for two hours after scraping off all the finish.

Using 150-grit sandpaper, sand down the furniture (always sand in the direction of the wood). The finish will have to be erased by hand using the same grit of sandpaper in corners and grooves that the sander will not reach. And this will remove any loose finish that is left behind.

Using a tack cloth, wipe the table clean to remove all sawdust. Use softer sandpaper, such as a 220-grit, to go over the furniture. And this will eliminate any scratches left over from the 150-grit.

Using mineral spirits

It’s simple to get rid of excess teak oil. You should rub a soft, lint-free cloth vigorously over the surplus teak oil. You should lightly moisten the mineral spirits on a clean, lint-free cleaning cloth. Mineral spirits will remove the oil from the teak without hurting it.

You’ll need a lint-free clean rag drenched in mineral spirits to finish the job. Run the towel over the finish until all surface oil is no more. The mineral spirits will thin out the teak oil, and the teak oil will be wiped away by the cloth. Mineral spirits are available at any good hardware store.

Using a chemical stripper

Apply a quarter-inch thick layer of chemical stripper on the surface and allow the chemical stripper to break down the existing finish for a few minutes. Scrape off the old finish with a plastic putty knife or an old spatula. Even if you’re using plastic, don’t scrape too hard, or you’ll damage the wood.
