  2. Gather all the essential equipment, including hive parts, the smoker, and the hive tool. That can be bought in a kit and purchased. You may start with new equipment to avoid any hidden problems.
  3. Place bees in the brood box.
  4. Remove a few frames from the brood box as you make room for the bees. Spray the bees with sugar water to calm and prepare them for their transition into the hive. Make a few firm shakes of the brood box so the bees will enter their new home.
  5. Replace frames after the bees are in the brood box. Start slowly putting the hive frames back into the box to avoid hurting bees. Place the last of the hive frames into the bee box.
  6. Place the queen inside first. Replacing a plug-in on one end of the queenโ€™s cage is replaced with a marshmallow. Worker bees eat the treat while exposed to the queenโ€™s pheromones and learn to accept her before releasing her. The cage is between two frames in the middle of the wooden box.
  7. Feed the bees. Set the inner cover on top of the brood box. Feeding the bees with a 2:1 sugar-water solution is a requirement. It is done when setting up their house. Make tiny holes in the jar lid to give the bees access to the liquid. Continue to feed them until they stop using the sugar-water solution. That depends on the neighborhoodโ€™s spring nectar flow instead.
  8. Finish assembly with a second deep box that shelters the feeder. Make sure the top of the hive is in place. You can leave the bees alone for three to five days. Return then to make sure the queen has been released.
