🔧 Lathe RPM Calculation Formulas

Imperial Units:

RPM = (SFM × 12) ÷ (π × Diameter)

  • SFM (Surface Feet per Minute) is the target surface speed.
  • The factor 12 converts feet to inches.
  • Use π ≈ 3.1416.

  • SFM = Surface feet per minute
  • 12 converts feet to inches

Metric Units:

If you’re using metric units, a similar formula applies:

RPM = (m/min × 1000) ÷ (π × Diameter in mm)

  • m/min is the metric cutting speed.
  • 1000 converts meters to millimeters.
