That way, you can look for the necessary features in the tool that you want to buy. A good spoon carving knife needs to be able to make accurate smooth hollows so that it can carve the rounded edges and make the spoon or bowl or any such object.

The blade needs to be sharp to maintain accuracy and a smooth shape. The great thing about beaver craft knives is that they come already sharpened and ready to use. It also has a rounding diameter of 25mm which will give a decent sized hollow. This is an important factor to consider.

The first thing that you will notice about this knife is the hooked blade, it almost looks like an inverted sickle, but much smaller. The point of the hook is to be able to reach down into the wood and cut away the unwanted chips, whilst also shaping the desired round shape.

The handle, which is longer than the blade, is a light brown color. It is made of ashwood, which has a nice looking clean color. The blade has a pointed tip, making it easy to reach certain places and also allowing more detailed carving.

The total length of this knife is 155mm. Of this length, 105mm is because of the handle. The knife has a rounding diameter of 25mm. The size of the handle means that it easily fits in the palm of your hand. Easy fir also means a comfortable fit and subsequently more control as you work.

This hook knife is small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. The handle is made of ashwood and covered with linseed oil which makes it smoother when you handle it. This is a right-handed hook knife. If you are a left-handed user, you will need to push to cut and that is more dangerous.

The handle material is very durable and will withstand most pressure needed to carve out a spoon or bowl or any such hollow. The blade needs to be sharp as well so that you can cut through just about any wood with ease. When it is blunt, it can be dangerous. The great thing is that the blade comes already sharpened. Make sure to keep it that way.

For a single unit, this knife comes at an affordable price. However, the cost may seem like it mounts up if you want to buy more than one, which will be necessary. You can not carve a spoon from start to finish using just the hook knife, you will need other tools such as a whittling knife to carve out the general.

We like the Beavercraft SK1 – Spoon Carving Knife 25mm because it makes smooth accurate hollow shapes. What we don’t like is that it is only good for right-handed users and this will mean that left-handed users are at a disadvantage. If you can pay a little extra, get the set unless you just want to replace the hook knife that you have. Happy shopping! Need a draw knife?
